Football, football, football. Wherever you go in the world there is no switching off from this beautiful game. Its a game we hate at times but one we can’t live without . Every Saturday hundreds of thousands of men, women and children don their clubs colours and go and cheer on the lads. It’s a religious thing really and one that leaves non-footie fans stone cold. Try telling someone who has supported a club for his whole life to stop and you will find real resistance, even if their team is totally sunk and being relegated. Real fans stick by their club no matter what happens, and when they sing on the terraces “City Til I Die” they really mean it. What I am getting at is that the fans ARE the club. Without the fans you have a football ground, some well kept grass the players and staff but then who cares what the result is ? Who are the players playing for? Without fans they play for themselves. What’s the point of that ? Exactly !! Now not all clubs in our fair Isle play in front of 50,000 people, and not even 500. Still the passion is the same, its still a bunch of like minded people supporting their team, standing in the rain, the snow storms when their other half is nice and snug at home in from of the tv. This is what being a supporter is all about. Being there, shouting and singing until you have no voice, shedding a tear or hugging a complete stranger. It’s what life is good for. Emotions, camaraderie, friendship. When I talk about fans supporting their club through thick and thin, I really mean it. Just think how many clubs you know are not doing so well, and struggling to survive. Did you know that 13 clubs are now run by Supporters Trusts, and not a bunch of businessmen, who have other interests besides “their” football club. These Trust run clubs are in control of their own destiny, and represent the fans desires and wishes, not swayed by commercial decisions and fashion trends, which more and more seems to be “lets sell the ground “ So it was one winters day in Cambridge, when the news broke that the ground had been sold by the Board of Directors. The fans were not given much info, so set up their own Action group, and secretly met to discover who owned the ground and to try and save their club. Little did they know that in 4 months time the doors were to be locked, and the club would cease to exist, just 2 years before its centenary year. Armed with a camcorder, the desire and love of Cambridge City, the filming began. We wanted the whole truth on record, not just the tabloid versions, or the ex-beloved Chairmans. For the first time the events were carefully recorded, interviews done with those in the know, and fans reactions captured. Two years in the making, two years of mixed emotions. Was this club going to die in its 98th year ? With an average attendance of 500 the fans rallied to fight the Decision Makers, and to save the club. What the fans didn’t know was the club was sold to a former Director and local builder, many months earlier. If they ever wondered why this Cambridge United FC Supporter was a Director at City, then this was the answer. He just seemed to be handy to help out when it came to the club getting into financial difficulties ...ever wondered how many times that has happened to clubs up and down the country ? With the ground being under-sold by £10M the fans were questioning the deal, and with great skill and tenacity, the new Board challenged the new owners. A court case ensued, as the land sale was blocked by the Fans, somewhat annoying the landlord. In September 2007 City had an historic result in the High Court Of Justice, and won back 50% of the ground, securing their immediate future. Never again will the greed and unscrupulous behaviour of people, who purport being football fans destroy this particular football club.
